In order to deepen the exchange of original scientific ideas, and promote the transformation of scientific research results, yesterday, the WLA Forum (Shanghai-Dishuihu Lake) with the theme of “Science and Technology, for the Common Destiny of Mankind” kicked off on the banks of the Shanghai Dishuihu Lake. 35 international laureates including 26 Nobel laureates, many world-renowned academic award winners of Wolf Prize, Lasker Award, Turing Award, Fellowship, and nearly 40 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and outstanding young scientists at home and abroad attended the forum. YNG Yong, the Mayor of Shanghai, attended the opening ceremony of the forum and delivered a speech. Roger Kornberg, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the president of WLA, delivered a speech on behalf of the scientists. SHI Guanghui, Vice Mayor of Shanghai and director of the Lingang Administrative Committee, hosted the ceremony.

YING Yong said that the development and progress of science and technology is crucial to the destiny and future of mankind. At present, a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation are poised for development. Some important scientific issues and key core technologies have already shown a harbinger of revolutionary breakthroughs. The kinetic energy of global development will be profoundly changed, and people's production and life style as well. Facing the future, Shanghai, as China's largest economic center city and an important window for China to see the world, will firmly grasp the historic opportunity of the scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, deepen the implementation of innovation-driven development strategy, and accelerate in becoming a scientific and technological innovation center with global influence. Shanghai will further strengthen its basic support and build big science facilities with advancing quality in the fields of photonic science, life sciences, and marine science. Shanghai will further strengthen its innovation layout, aiming at the frontiers of science and technology and the national strategic needs, to initiate and participate in the implementation of a number of special projects and major plans, and to achieve major breakthroughs in leading original results. Shanghai will further strengthen its openness and innovation, take the initiative to actively “attract talents”. We open our arms and warmly welcome scientists from all over the world to come to Shanghai to give lectures and conduct scientific research activities. We can jointly overcome the scientific and technological puzzles that affecting the fate of humanity and the well-being of people's lives, promoting the transformation of more scientific research results into real productivity. Shanghai will strictly protect intellectual property rights and establish an intellectual property protection system that gives priority to judicial protection, enjoys coordinating protections from judicial and administrative sides, and respects the international rules. We look forward to the spark of wisdom that appears today can draw a blueprint for cooperation and development tomorrow, and bear the fruits of mutual benefit in the future.

Roger Kornberg said that basic science research is critical to solving future problems. The World Laureates Association is committed to driving laureates to conduct more basic research in the future and to achieve breakthroughs through global cooperation and exchanges. At the same time, young scientists will be vigorously trained. Shanghai is a vibrant city that is not only competitive in terms of economy and globalization, but also a leading player in technological innovation. WLA hopes to cooperate with universities and enterprises to promote scientific research and transformation of results.

I At the opening ceremony, the guests of the conference jointly launched the WLA Science Community project. Before the opening ceremony, YING Yong also met with more than 30 international laureates, including Roger Kornberg.

WLA Forum aims to focus on the construction of Shanghai's globally influential science and technology innovation center and to build an international and comprehensive science platform. The th ree-day forum will include three forums, including the Theme Forums, the World Young Scientists Forum and the Frontier Technology and Innovation Development Roundtable Meetings. Among them, the four theme forums are WLA Photon Science and Industry Forum, WLA Life Sciences and Industry Forum, WLA New Drug Discovery and Translational Forum, and WLA Brain Science and Artificial Intelligence Forum.
